Penfolds has blended five vintages of Grange to produce a new $2,630 (AU$3,500) wine.
The wine, called Penfolds g5, is the final release in the ‘g’ series – and follows the highly successful launch of Penfolds g3 in 2017 and g4 in 2020.
The Penfolds g5 blend incorporates wines from the exceptional 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 vintages, to create “a completely unique expression” of Penfolds’ flagship wine, according to the company.
The 2010 Grange is the base for the blend, which comprises 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Most of the fruit comes from the Barossa (70%), McLaren Vale and Clare Valley, with a small portion from Wrattonbully in 2014.
Chief winemaker Peter Gago explained: “Many collectors have queried why the landmark 2010 Grange was not included in g3 or g4. And provocatively, how could we not include the yet-to-be-released 2018 Grange? Fixed.
“Each of the five vintages sensitively brings their own personality and contribution to the blend. Which is an inverted anticipatory response to the inevitable query – why no g6?”
The 2018, he continues, adds “great freshness” to the blend, which integrated after 12 months in neutral American oak hogsheads.
Only 2,200 bottles of the Penfolds g5 have been released.
Blending across vintages is something Penfolds has been doing since 1844 with its fortified wines. A natural progression was to apply this technique to a red blend.
The first edition, Penfolds g3, comprised wines from the 2008, 2012 and 2014 vintages. Two years later, Penfolds g4 was unveiled – from the 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2016 vintages. Stylistically and philosophically equal, the newly released g5 is said to be “an evolution of the original concept, blending not three or four vintages of Grange but five to deliver an exceptional wine that honours our globally recognised icon”.
The release of Penfolds g5 coincides with Grange’s 70th anniversary year. After unbroken vintage releases from 1951 to 2021, the iconic South Australian wine is one of the world’s most collected wines. The 2018 Grange will be released in August 2022.
