IWC will be at Portugal’s key wine event in February. As well as promoting the leading wine competition to Portuguese producers, co-chair Charles Metcalfe will host a masterclass featuring IWC medal-winning wines…
If you would like to find out more about Portuguese wines, the best thing to do is visit ‘Essência do Vinho – Porto’. This key wine event will take place February 20-23, in Porto’s magnificent and iconic Palácio da Bolsa.
The event, now in its 17th year, proves that Portuguese wines are much more than Port or Madeira. The still wines, which also have a rich tradition, have only become recognised on the world stage in recent years – thanks to a new generation of winemakers and wine producers who are making a huge effort to bring the impressive diversity of Portuguese indigenous grape varieties (more than 250) to our wine glasses.

In 2004, ‘Essência do Vinho – Porto’ was launched to showcase this diversity in one impressive place. And it was a great success.
The event hosts 3,000 wines from more than 350 Portuguese producers plus some other wines from all over the world. There will also be 50 masterclasses and thematic sessions, guided by Revista de Vinhos magazine’s team and by invited winemakers. The event also sees the selection of ‘TOP 10 Portuguese Wines’ by a panel of 48 specialists from more than 10 countries, new wine releases, old and very old vintages, classics and new wave brands, and pairings of wine and food from top chefs.
It’s an amazing opportunity to meet and discover the best that Portugal has to offer the wine world.
In addition, in 2020, the International Wine Challenge (IWC) will be there to promote the competition to Portuguese wine producers, to offer them the opportunity to enter their wines in IWC 2020 Tranche 2 (and save on shipping), and co-chair Charles Metcalfe will host a masterclass featuring IWC medal-winning wines.
