Olivier Humbrecht MW at Coe Vintners tasting

The talented Mr. Humbrecht was in London on Thursday last to present his wines at the Coe Vintners tasting following a presentation of his wines and and talk on biodynamic farming. I managed to arrive there later in the afternoon and speak to him about his specialty topic, which you can watch on the video player to the right. ( The facial hair was a work in progress for Movember, the charity that raises awareness for Prostate Cancer).

He believes that only biodynamically produced wines need follow the said calendar, which identifies the optimum day to drink your wine. As most of you will know, the root days won’t do you favourite bottles any favours, as the wine teams at M&S and Tesco attested to this year by holding their tastings on fruit days which they believe show off the better qualities in the wine. Humbrecht bases his theory on the grounds that only grapes that were raised in accordance to the movements of the moon are the real candidates to consider when deliberating over ‘to drink or not to drink’. Wines produced by the more widely practiced method of applying pesticides and herbicides are less, if at all, responsive to the movements of the moon, he believes.

Amongst the wines that were shown at the Coe Vitners walk around tasting was the impeccable Schloss Halbturn Pinot Noir 2007, Burgenland, Austria. Drinking superbly at the moment it is a silky smooth delight of sweet cheeries and spice. I can imagine this one sliding down nicely over Christmas.
